You know, I was going to start this post out by saying that I sure am glad I moved down to the southeast corner of the country, where I'll be safe from any Japanese radiation. But, I guess that's out the fucking window now. But if I understand what is happening, I have a question. Some of the reactors had already been shut down prior to the earthquake for maintenance. This is good. The remaining reactors were shut down automatically after the earthquake, but the tsunami flooded the plant, knocking out emergency generators needed to run the cooling pumps that controlled the previously live reactors. This is bad. So my question is this. Would it not have been possible to truck in, or even helicopter in some replacement generators? Let's say the roads were filled with debis, so no trucks on the road. Okay. The largest Caterpillar diesel engines designed for power stations run upwards of 400,000lbs, but there are plenty in the 100,000-110,000 range. And the Russian Mi-26 can lift 109,350 lbs. So uhhhhh, what the fuck? Ferry in half a dozen of those fuckers and problem solved? So what's the hold up? is there more to it than that? Because unless they do something quick, Gilbert Gottfried is just going to keep making tasteless jokes. I'm sorry, was that too soon?
