Generally I have somewhat of an unconscious objection to turning national tragedies into entertainment; to me it's capitalizing on someone else's grief. I have never watched, nor do I plan to watch, Flight 93 or World Trade Center. Everything I need to know about both of those events I watched unfold live on my television. So last year when Lone Survivor was announced [trailer #1 and trailer #2] I was both excited -- who doesn't like war movies -- and mortified at the same time. Those mixed emotions coupled with the fact that Hollywood has a reputation for fucking up real life stores such as this, and I didn't have very high expectations. But reactions from Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Gene Axelson's mother, and from the rescue attempt, Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel Healy's mother all seem to be very supportive of the film, so I'm beginning to warm up to the idea. I wasn't sold on
Marky Mark Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell, but this week Wahlberg gave an pretty good interview as for the authenticity and I've always enjoyed Ben Foster's work, he's a terrific supporting actor. But Emile Hirsch; how the fuck does this guy keep finding work?
“In the military, if we don't know something, we say we don't know and proceed to shut up until we do. Some highly paid charlatans in the media think it's absolutely fine to take a wild guess at the truth and then tell a couple of million people it's cast-iron fact, just in case they might be right...I hope they're proud of themselves, because they nearly broke my mom's heart.... ” ? So in addition to my immediate zombie apocalypse plans -- someone recently suggested the water here on the Gulf side might be too shallow for a viable defense -- I recently came across this article about an island within an island within an island, and thought wow that'd be perfect for the long term, yes? But them someone was like, "How will you get your supplies?" Well, the inner island is 120 meters across, that's 14k square meters, or roughly 3.5 acres. But let's say that steep cliffs and rocks render only 2 acres are usable. That's still more than enough room to build some spacious living quarters, farm yourself a nice garden, a chicken coop, a few stray goats, and a pigpen for some bacon. Then it's only a short boatride to the middle ring island where you could release larger game to hunt, some pheasants and geese, maybe clear some wheat fields, and a clear pasture for some cattle. The only thing I'd worry about is finding a source of freshwater for both drinking and making beer. And then someone went and point out that I'd be sitting inside an active volcano and I'm all like, FINE. It's not like there aren't plenty of other islands to choose from, I just thought this one was near with its layered natural defenses. Besides, I know I could take the island over since the Phillipines have already banned guns since Ferdinand Marcos took over in 2012. I'd be king, baby!
