Seventy Years Ago Today, The The Red Army Liberated Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

The name of the town “Auschwitz” has long been a synonym for bloody German atrocities in the lexicon of the peoples of the world. Few of its prisoners escaped the fires of its notorious “ovens.” From behind the wire of its numerous camps only a phantom echo had filtered of the wails from the lips of its thousands of prisoners. Only now, when the troops of the First Ukrainian Front had liberated Auschwitz, was it possible to see with one's own eyes the entirety of this terrible camp, in which many of its tens of square kilometers of fields were soaked in human blood, and literally fertilized with human ash.

In the first years of the camp, the Germans maintained only a cottage industry of death: they simply led prisoners to a large open pit, forced them to lie down and shot them in the back of the head. When one layer was full, the next would be forced to lie down head-to-foot on the layer below. And so was filled the second layer, and the third, and the fourth … When the grave was full, to make sure that all of the people were dead, it was raked with submachine gun fire several times, while those for whom there was no room in the grave covered it up. Thus were filled hundreds of enormous pits in the eastern part of the camp, which bore the name of the “old” graves. The German hangmen, noting the primitiveness of this method of killing, decided to increase the productivity of the industrial plant of death by mechanizing it, leading to the gas chambers, the electric conveyor belt, the construction of the blast furnace for burning bodies and the so-called ovens.

But for the prisoners of Auschwitz death itself was not the most terrible thing. The German sadists, before killing their confinees, tormented them with hunger, cold, 18 hour days, and monstrous punishments. They showed me leather-covered steel rods that they used to be beat the confinees. On the handle – the mark of the Krupp factory in Dresden. These articles were produced on an industrial scale. I saw, in facilities in the southern part of the camp, benches with straps on which people were beaten to death. They were covered with zinc so the blood of the victims could be washed off: the hangmen had a care for hygiene! I saw a specially constructed oaken chair, in which people were killed, after having had their backs broken. I saw massive rubber truncheons, all bearing the stamp of the Krupp factory, with which the confinees were beaten about the head and genitals. [source]

The Soviet army entered Auschwitz — the network of extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland — on Jan. 27, 1945, liberating the most notorious site of the Holocaust. In the decades since, groups of survivors have gathered to honor that day — including an annual remembrance at Auschwitz itself. This year, they mark the 70th anniversary of liberation on Tuesday — a day that, for a significant portion of remaining survivors, may be the last major remembrance of their lifetimes. The numbers themselves tell the story. [source]

As the world marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945, a group of now elderly survivors of the Nazi death camp have been photographed holding wartime pictures of themselves and their murdered families. Erzsebet Brodt, 89, holds a picture of her family who were killed in the death camps. Remembering the train journey they made, she said that those who were 'sick or about to give birth were forced out and put into one wagon: "When the wagon was opened in Auschwitz we saw that everyone was dead inside." For the Jews who died in gas chambers, the issue of resistance was moot - until as late as mid-1942, most Jews were unaware about the implementation of the Final Solution. Stripped of weapons, facing starvation and disease combined with the prospect of deportation, most Jews believed that they were being relocated to work. For virtually all, the reality that they faced immediate death did not occur until the doors of the gas chambers were sealed, the lights were turned off and the gas filled the rooms. But by then, it was too late. Those who did resist - either by running from the trains or attacking their captors - faced certain death. Some took advantage of this option and were summarily executed on the spot. Others chose to take their own lives when faced with the hopelessness of the situation. It might be argued that suicide under these circumstances was itself resistance. For others, deciding not to commit suicide but rather to make an attempt at survival amidst the hopelessness and despair of this situation was their resistance. Those that resisted more actively found that any success resulted in unintended consequences since the Nazis practiced collective responsibility. If a Nazi soldier was murdered by a Jew, not only was that Jew executed, but also his family and perhaps a hundred others. As a result, few Jews carried out active resistance from fear of reprisals. Katie Worthman was born in Austria, and lived there for seven years under Hitlers brutal regime. She says that the story of Hitler overthrowing governments and people in order to come to power just simply isn't true, but rather the Austrian people elected Hitler with 98% of the vote at the ballot box. Mrs. Worthman then goes on to say that the Austrian people had guns, but the government began to say that they were dangerous, so they began to implement gun registration. Then she said this was followed by turning in their weapons to the police station in order to cut down on crime, and if citizens didn't… there would be capital punishment. Mrs. Worthman says that the dictatorship, “didn't happen over night, but it took 5 years, gradually, little by little, to escalate to a dictatorship.” As a Nazi survivor, what is her advice to us... “Keep your guns. Keep your guns and buy more guns." [source] - [video]

Faye Schulman always carried two things with her in the forests of Poland. A medical kit to care for her fellow partisans, and a camera. Schulman is the only known Jewish partisan photographer to capture life in the forest, Braff said. Most photographs of World War II resistance fighters were taken after liberation. Schulman was recruited to take pictures for the Nazis (her brother had already fled town). She would snap headshots of Nazi officials and portraits of their mistresses. One day, she developed a photograph that was clearly a mass grave of Jews who had been killed. Peering closely at the print, she recognized her own family. She hid the negative in a box of photo paper to assure it would remain safe and unseen. She vowed vengeance and sought justice in the forest with a group of Russians — mostly men and overwhelmingly non-Jews — she'd met up with when they raided Lenin for supplies. “I want people to know there was resistance,” Faye said during that interview, the text of which is displayed with the photo exhibit. “Jewish people didn't go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.” [source]
